HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team closed out the 2009 season on Wednesday night with a loss, as Norfolk State took a
3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-16) win out of Holland Hall.
The Lady Pirates (9-19) took the first set thanks to a run in the middle of the set; Norfolk State opened up an 11-6 lead, but Hampton used a 13-6 run to take a 19-17 lead, eventually winning the set on the strength of 14 kills and nine errors in 41 attacks. Hampton also held the lead in the second and third sets, but the Lady Spartans used spirited late rallies to emerge victorious.
From there, Norfolk State had a .406 hitting percentage (14 kills, one error, 32 attacks) in the fourth set. The Lady Spartans had 46 kills and just 23 errors on 149 attacks in the match, for a hitting percentage of .154. The Lady Pirates hit .085, thanks to 46 kills and 33 errors in 153 attacks.
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) recorded her ninth double-double of the season, leading the Lady Pirates with 13 kills while also recording 10 digs on defense.
Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 12 kills and just seven errors in 23 attacks for a .217 hitting percentage.
Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) had the team's highest hitting percentage at .231 (five kills, two errors, 13 attacks).
Hampton held a 5-4 edge in service aces, thanks to two each from Armstrong and
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.).
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) led Hampton with 38 of the team's 40 assists.
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) led the Lady Pirates with 19 digs on defense, while
Adriana Vazquez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) added 16 digs.
Elayne Greer led the Lady Spartans (9-21) with 14 kills, while Angie Clewis had 11.
