TJ Mitchel, who threw three touchdowns passes, the Hampton University Pirates registered a 59-14 victory over the Aggies of North Carolina A&T here on Saturday. The win kept the Pirates undefeated at 2-0 (2-0 MEAC) while the Aggies remained winless at 0-3 (0-1 MEAC).
Mitchell, who was the MEAC’s offensive player-of-the-week a week ago, passed for a total of 210 yards with a 52 yard compaction being his longest of the night. As a team, Hampton was well-rounded in scoring as the Pirates scored on defense, special teams and on the offensive side of the ball.
The defense of the Pirates was capped off with a 22-yard touchdown interception run by Buck Buchanan Award candidate
Kendall Langford (Sr., DE, 6-6, Petersburg, VA), who pick off
Shelton Morgan in the third. Langford also had two tackles, with one for a loss of yardage on the night. Also scoring for the defense was
Vaughn Mansfield (Sr., FS, 6-2, Washington, DC), who ran a fumble recovery back for a 41-yard touchdown to give the Pirates the go-ahead 59-14 victory over the Aggies.
Stepping up big on special teams for the Pirates was #Kevin Teel# (Jr., WR, 5-9, Bowie, MD), who took a kickoff return back for 70 yards in the third quarter to give Hampton a 24-7 lead over North Carolina A&T. Teel also had three receptions for 68 yards with a 42-yarder being his longest on the night with a touchdown. Teel scored 12 points for the Pirates in addition to gaining 95 yards of total offence.
The Pirates’ offensive unit accumulated a total of 438 yards, including 228 yards rushing and 210 yards receiving. The 228 yards rushing came greatly through the hands of #Van Morgan# (Sr., RB, 6-0, New Smyrna, PA), who rushed for 154 yards with two touchdowns on just 24 carries with a 48-yard run being his longest of the contest. The 210 yards receiving came mostly by the hands of #Jermery Gilchrist# (Jr., WR, 5-10, Virginia Beach, VA), who caught six passes for 112 yards with a touchdown and a 52-yard reception being his longest.
Hampton’s defensive unit held the Aggies to only 96 yards rushing and only 86 yards passing for 182 yards of total offense. The Pirates’ defense was led once again by #Wakeem Goode# (Jr., LB, 5-11, Cleveland, OH), who led both teams with 10 tackles (6 solo, 4 asst.) with a tackle for a loss of four yards. Right behind Goode was #Demarius Sapp# (Grad., LB, 6-1, Crawfordville, FL), who accounted for nine tackles total (5 solo, 4 asst.) in the Pirates’ victory over the Aggies.
The Pirates of Hampton University will be back in action on Thursday, September 20
