Delbert Tyler joins the Pirate coaching staff after working at Robert Morris (2022-25). A 2014 Hampton graduate where he was a standout linebacker at Hampton, Tyler earned All-MEAC recognition and recorded 386 tackles in his career, second most in Hampton history.

Tyler was a four-year letterman and defensive captain at Hampton from 2010-13. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management in 2014. He was invited to the rookie mini-camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014.

He had two stints on the Colonials coaching staff spanning seven years. In his final term at Robert Morris. he was assistant tight ends coach as well as recruiting coordinator. Tyler filled a variety of roles during his time on the staff. While serving as recruiting coordinator during his tenure with the Colonials, Tyler also coached the defensive line and outside linebackers.

In 2019, in his second season at Robert Morris, Tyler helped the Colonials post an 7-5 mark and a 6-1 record in the Northeast Conference play. It marked the program’s first winning season in nearly a decade. Tyler assisted in coaching the linebackers, helping Aniello Buzzacco establish a new school single season record for tackles with 131 (10.9 tpg) which led the NEC and ranked fifth in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Sandwiched between his two terms at Robert Morris, he spent one season as the defensive recruiting coordinator at Army.

Under Tyler’s tutelage, two of his players earned all-conference honors. Chase Jackson (2023) was named to the All-NEC squad and Landen Lucas (2024) earned All-Big South Conference recognition.
 
Tyler began his coaching career at ASA College (Fla.) in 2016 where he was an assistant defensive line coach. After a season at Findlay where he was defensive line coach. He broke down film and helped recruit in portions of Ohio.
 
The Monroeville, Pa., native worked at Eastern Michigan in 2017 as a graduate assistant defensive line coach while also assisting in recruiting and film breakdown.
 
Before joining the staff at EMU, Tyler spent the 2016 campaign coaching the defensive line at the University of Findlay. In addition to his coaching duties, Tyler broke down film and rank the scout team while also recruiting portions of Ohio.

Tyler and his wife, Demia Tyler, have two sons: Delbert Tyler III and Dallas Tyler.
