HAMPTON, Va. (October 2, 2026) … Hampton University deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer Derrick Price will be inducted into the Bluefield State University Athletics Hall of Fame. The ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 2 at the Bluefield State Student Center.
Price is credited with transforming the landscape of Big Blue Athletics during his tenure from 2016 to 2024 as Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and head men's basketball coach.
He spearheaded BSU's return to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2022 after nearly a decade as an independent program. Under his leadership, Bluefield State expanded its athletic offerings by adding 10 new varsity sports—highlighted by the return of Big Blue football after a 40-year hiatus—and the construction of a state-of-the-art weight room facility.
As head coach at Bluefield State four seasons, he led the team to three appearances in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) tournament where his 2018-19 squad finished as national runner-up.
Price was a member of the Bluefield University basketball team and served as team caption for two seasons. As a senior, he was named first-team all-conference and helped lead the team to the 2002 league title. As an assistant coach, Price helped lead the basketball team to the NCCAA National Tournament three times as well as a second-place finish during the 2013-14 season.
Joining Price in being honored are Jordan Hines (men's basketball), Avery Holliday (basketball), Geoff Hunter (baseball coach), Jacob Carey (tennis), Seward Bush (football), the late Mark O'Dell "Joe" Page (basketball) and the 1992-93 women's basketball team.
