NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 13, 2025) … A
Taryn Goodwin putback goal with 55 seconds left in the first half put Hampton University ahead to stay in a 3-1 win over South Carolina State on Sunday evening at Powhatan Field.
With the win, Hampton (5-3-1) finishes a four-match homestand with a 3-0-1 mark to make the first four-match unbeaten streak in program history. The win also guaranteed the first minimum .500 record at home as Hampton is 4-0-1 with four CAA home matches left.
The Pirates struck early in this contest as
Makayla Wade unleashed a 27-yard free kick that sailed into the upper part of the net for a 1-0 lead barely two minutes into the contest. That was the second time in this homestand that Wade blasted a deep free kick for a goal.
South Carolina State (1-8) answered with a long blast of its own as Alana Watts uncorked one from 25-yards out to level the contest at 1-1 at the 8:47 mark.
Hampton kept forcing the action and late in the half found the go-ahead tally as
Nylah Jennings shot was saved by goalie Jada Gettings but the rebound fell at the feet of Goodwin who found the back of the net with 55 seconds left to put the Pirates up 2-1.
The Pirates pushed play in the second half and took advantage of their speed as
Keri Geter served one deep into the Bulldogs end and found a streaking Jennings who slid it past the goalie for the insurance goal in a 3-1 Hampton win.
In the contest, Hampton held a 22-3 advantage in shots including a 13-1 margin in the second half. The Pirates also had nine corner kick chances compared to none for South Carolina State.
Hampton now starts CAA play with a trip to Towson on Thursday night for a 6 p.m. first kick.
