UNCW’s Late Surge Propels Seahawks Past the Pirates 5-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. (May 2, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team fell to the UNCW Seahawks 5-3 in seven innings. The Pirates would take the lead in the second and regain the advantage in the fifth. In the final two innings, UNCW scored three runs to take control of the contest late.

The Seahawks led off the bottom of the first with an infield base knock. While the leadoff hitter stole second base, she would be out trying to steal third. After the Pirates recorded their first out of the frame, a solo home run gave UNCW the early 1-0 lead.

Coach Cat Tarvin's side got the bats going in the following stanza. Carmynn Bonner began the bottom of the second by drawing a walk. Kylie Hill scored Bonner on a two-run homer in the next at-bat. Hampton followed up Hill's go-ahead home run with back-to-back walks. The Seahawks got out of the frame with consecutive strikeouts.

UNCW tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. The Seahawks were able to bring in a leadoff walk on a single up the middle. The Pirates responded once more in the fifth frame. Freshman Cassidy Lee produced a single through the left side. With Kylee Quinn and Leah Maduro tallying base hits, the bases were loaded with pirates. On her second walk of the day, Bonner put HU back up 3-2.

The Seahawks in the bottom half of the stanza regained the lead with two more runs coming across the plate. UNCW continued to build upon its advantage in the sixth inning. With only one out, a base knock up the middle increased UNCW's lead to two runs.

Hampton closes out the regular season against UNCW tomorrow afternoon. First pitch against the Seahawks is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
