Hampton Ends Pirate-Spartan Challenge With a Loss to South Dakota

HAMPTON, Va. (March 2, 2025) …Hampton University softball completed the Pirate-Spartan Challenge this afternoon. The South Dakota Coyotes defeated the Pirates 9-0 in seven innings. Hampton's offense was held to only three hits.
In the top of the first inning, Coach Cat Tarvin's side produced two quick outs. South Dakota got the bats going with a single to left field. With baserunners on first and third, the Coyotes scored the contest's first run. South Dakota eventually loaded up the bases with another base knock, The Pirates got out of the frame on a pop-up.
Throughout the next two innings, the Coyotes produced four more runs. South Dakota continued to record hits tallying three more in the second. The Coyotes' run in the top of the third came after a leadoff triple. The baserunner at third was able to come across the plate on a wild pitch making it 5-0.
Hampton recorded its first hit of the afternoon in the second frame with Kylie Hill's infield knock. The Pirates finished the contest with three hits. Carmynn Bonner and Camryn Hamilton were the two Pirates to produce a base knock.
In the final two innings South Dakota's caught fire once again. While only one run scored in the sixth, three more came across in the top of the seventh. The Coyotes began the stanza with four consecutive hits. Pitcher Jada Evans got the Pirates out of the jam at the top of the seventh. The senior recorded three consecutive strikeouts.

Hampton begins Coastal Athletic Association Play on March 7 against Charleston. The first pitch of the three-game series is slated for Friday at 5:00 p.m.
