Hampton Softball Heads Into Final Day of 901 Classic With a 2-2 Record

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 8, 2025) … Coach Cat Tarvin's squad split the second day of the 901 classic. While HU only had seven hits in the first game against Rust, the Pirates took advantage of 12 walks and scored 15 runs in five innings. Against the host school Memphis, Hampton battled back from a two-run deficit to tie it in the sixth frame. However, the Tigers with two outs in the seventh scored the game-winning run.

GAME ONE

The Pirates started to take control of the contest early on in the first inning. Cheyenne Crenshaw reached first base on a walk and got into scoring position with a stolen base. While Leah Maduro fouled out to center field, Crenshaw still came across the plate due to the Rust error. Hampton threatened to score again in the first frame with baserunners on second and third. The Bearcats got out of the jam with a strikeout.

Coach Tarvin's side continued to be successful on the offensive end. In two of the next three innings the Pirates scored at least five runs. While Hampton only produced seven hits in four innings, the Pirates were walked on 12 separate occasions Myiah Sutton and Kylie Hill led HU on the offensive end both tallying two hits. Hill went 2-for-2 from the plate while producing three RBIs. Sutton in her first collegiate start was 2-for-4 while driving in two runs.

During the top of the fifth inning, Hampton had the advantage over Rust 15-1. After the Bearcats produced an early baserunner with a single to the outfield, consecutive wild pitches advanced the runner to third base. Another base hit for the Bearcats cut into the Pirates lead. Ava Lester was able to get Hampton out of the frame with a strikeout to end the game. Lester in her first career start got the win for Hampton. The Richmond, Va. native, finished the game with seven strikeouts and only walked two batters.

GAME TWO

The Pirates were trailing the Tigers 2-0 after the first inning. Memphis had baserunners on second and third before Hampton recorded an out. A single to right field drove in the Tigers two runs. HU did limit the damage dealt by Memphis. The Pirates got out of the frame with a double to the pitcher Jada Evans

With Evans on the mound, Hampton held Memphis scoreless for five consecutive innings. The Seaford, Del. product only issued three walks while tallying two strikeouts.

Hampton cut the Tiger's advantage in half at the top of the third inning. A hit by pitch put a runner on first base for the Pirates. Coach Tarvin brought in Cheyenne Crenshaw to pinch run. Crenshaw stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With a full count and two outs, Aitirhna Aiken produced an RBI on a single up the middle.

In the top of the fifth inning, both Aiken and Camryn Hamilton reached first on a walk. With a wild pitch, the baserunners advanced inching the tying run closer to home plate. During Carmynn Bonner's at-bat, a fielding error proved to be costly for Memphis. Bonner was able to reach first and Hamilton scored making it 2-2.

Memphis quickly had a runner-in-scoring position in the seventh frame. The game-winning run reached second before Hampton recorded an out. With a heads-up play by the Pirates infield and a strikeout, Coach Tarvin's squad quickly produced back-to-back outs. The bases were loaded after a Tiger reached first on a walk. With a ball hit up the middle out of the reach of Hampton's infielders, Memphis secured the game with a base hit.
