Hampton Softball Split Doubleheader With St. Bonaventure

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 23, 2025) …  Hampton University softball team split its home opener doubleheader against St. Bonaventure. The Pirates took the game in extra innings 8-7. The offense throughout the contest was clicking recording nine hits. The Bonnies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two. HU cut into St. Bonaventure's advantage in the fourth frame but the Bonnies held on to win 4-1.

GAME ONE

St. Bonaventure got on the board first in the top of the first frame. With only one out, back-to-back singles to the outfield put baserunners on the corners. Hampton got another out on a steal attempt but the Bonnies were able to score on the throw. Angelina Branch got the Pirates out of the inning with her first strikeout of the day.

Coach Cat Tarvin's side was able to take the lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs the Pirates had runners on first and second. Hampton found life with the Bonnies issued back-to-back walks. Freshman Amani Johnson produced an RBI single to the outfield. Carmynn Bonner returned to the plate and smacked a double down the left field line clearing the bases making 3-1.

In the following inning. Hampton's offense continued to cultivate runs. Santrea Armstead's double brought in Cassidy Lee after she reached second on an error. With the bases full of Pirates, Johnson came up clutch once again HU. Johnson's two-RBI single increased Hampton's lead to five. 

St. Bonaventure got the bats going late in the top of the seventh. The Bonnies made it a four-run contest taking advantage of an error made by the Pirates. St Bonaventure tied the game at 6-6 with one swing of the bat. A grand slam to left filed by Kymora Wang cleared the bases.

In extra innings, the Bonnies scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, putting pressure on the Pirates. With only one out Hampton had runners on second and third. An error by St. Bonaventure allowed Kylie Hill to reach first and bring in two runs.

GAME TWO

The Bonnies' offense found its rhythm early tallying four runs in the first three innings. At the top of the second only one run came across the plate for St. Bonaventure. Coach Mike Treehouse's squad began the frame with a leadoff double. A fielder's choice advanced the baserunners, but lead run scored on the throw to first. With the Bonnies finding gaps, two more runs scored before Hampton recorded two outs. Later on in the stanza another single up the middle made it 4-0.

Hampton started to cut into the Bonnies' advantage. HU loaded up the bases with back-to-back singles and a walk. St. Bonaventure got two quick outs on a double play. Santrea Armstead produce a single through the left side scoring a run. The Bonnies got out of the frame with a strikeout.

Throughout the contest, Hampton had runners in scoring position but could not bring them in. The Pirates left 11 runners on base in the second game of the doubleheader. St. Bonaventure's held onto its three-run lead.

UP NEXT

Hampton returns to action tomorrow in a doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's. The first pitch for game one is slated for noon.
