
Pirates Have a Solid Showing, 2-0 Against Norfolk State Wednesday

Hampton, VA– Continuing their strong performance at the plate and in the circle, the Hampton University softball team swept Norfolk State 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pirates return to action at home on Friday, April 22, at 3 PM against Radford University.

GAME 1 SCORE: HAMPTON 7, NORFOLK STATE 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Hampton started off the bottom of first with a double to center, a single to the right and an unearned run scored by Junior Tiera Washington (Chesapeake, VA) from an error by NSU shortstop. (1-0)
- The Spartans tried to put a run on the board but couldn't get away from the groundouts in the top of the first and second innings.
- Hampton advanced to 2-0 in the second by a triple to center field, allowing senior Lauryn Brooks (Bowie, MD) to put a run on the board.
- Senior Casey Walker (Bristow, VA) followed with a hit to left field, advancing all the way to third, showcasing her speed. Then with Junior Kennedi Bedell (Columbus, GA) at-bat, Walker snuck home, extending the lead 3-0.
- Hampton continued to apply pressure on Norfolk State with back-to-back triples and a double to right field for the 4-0 lead, compliments of Senior Janae Lyles (Waldorf, MD) in the bottom of the third.
- After two quick outs for HU in the bottom of the fifth inning, Lyles hit a home run to left field to give the Pirates a spark, extending the lead to 5-0.
- At the bottom of the sixth, with all bases loaded, Walker got hit by a pitch bringing Senior Kiaya Jeusi (Woodbridge, VA) home. 6-0
- Hampton suffered back-to-back outs in one play, yet Brooks managed to score the Pirate's seventh run before Bedell struck out, getting the run-rule victory.
GAME 2 SCORE: HAMPTON- 7, NORFOLK STATE- 6
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Spartans came for revenge in game two with a homer to center field by Higa and a run scored by Potter at the top of the second inning to take the lead. (2-0)
- After HU walked two and stole three bases, The Pirates scored its lone run of the inning in the bottom half by Jeusi. (2-1)
- Hampton crept back and stole the lead, scoring a run by Washington off three hits and a run by Junior Mo'Ne Davis (Philadelphia. PA) off two stolen bases in the bottom of the third to take the lead. (3-2)
- In a huge fourth inning for NSU, Sheehan doubled to center field and scored, while Potter followed with an unearned run on a wild pitch at the top of the fourth to take the lead. (3-4)
- NSU added two more runs in the fourth to reclaim the lead and momentum. (6-3)
- With the bases loaded at the bottom of the fourth, Washington hit a single RBI to left field, giving Walker the go-head to slide home. (6-4)
- Quick outs left both the Pirates and Spartans quiet and stuck in the fifth and sixth innings.
- With darkness looming in the bottom half of the seventh, Hampton didn't give up. Bedell scored an unearned run on a fielding error; Sophomore Camryn Thompson (Lakewood, CA) followed after Jeusi loaded all bases on her single RBI to left field and tied the game. (6-6)
- After advancing to third on a single, Lyles scored the tie-breaking run on a single to left field by Brooks, giving the Pirates the win.
