SECOND HALF RUN SINKS MEN'S BASKETBALL IN LOSS TO USC UPSTATE

HAMPTON, VA – The Hampton men's basketball saw visiting USC Upstate rally in the second half and fell 85-78 in Big South conference play Wednesday.
Guard Russell Dean scored 24 points for the Pirates in Wednesday night's game. Forward Dajour Dickens scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Forward Najee Garvin added 15 points to the Pirates' scoring output.
The first half started and neither team was able to gain advantage over the other. A flurry of made baskets alternated between Hampton and USC Upstate. The Pirates found themselves down 23-21 with 7:50 remaining in the half. However, they would finish the first half on a 19-10 run and find themselves up 40-33 heading into halftime. The Pirates shot 48.5 percent from the field in the first half while holding the Spartans to 37.5 percent shooting. The Pirates' first half offense was fueled by guard Russell Dean (10 points), forward Najee Garvin (nine points) and forward Dajour Dickens (eight points).
The Pirate offense picked up where it left off in the first half, extending their lead to as many as 10 points through the initial five minutes of the second half. The Spartans would charge back to grab their first lead of the second half, 63-60, with 8:07 remaining in the game. The Spartans outlasted a late game effort from the Pirates, giving them the win.
The Pirates continue their three-game homestand on Saturday, February 5, when they take on Winthrop University at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
