HAMPTON, Va. – A pair of tight games went the hosts way on Saturday as the Hampton softball team took two in day two of the Hampton Invite defeating Binghamton 5-3 and Wagner 4-3 in eight innings.
Against Binghamton, the Lady Pirates scratched a run in the first and then put up three in the bottom of the second. With two outs and
Lexi Lomax at second, she stole third and scored as the throw sailed into the outfield.Â
Skylar Chavez then singled and went to second as
Jackie Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. Both runners scored as
Tiera Washington doubled to center.
Binghamton trimmed the lead to 4-3 with three runs in the fourth, but Hampton pushed the eventual winning run across in the fifth as
Janae Lyles singled and was replaced by pinch-runner
Casey Walker. She stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch to lead 5-3.
Washington was the lone multi-hit player for Hampton with a 2-for 4 performance driving in the first three runs.Â
Emily Workman earned the win with four innings, five hits and striking out four.
Game two saw Hampton trail 2-0 before evening the game with a two-run second. With one out, Lyles walked and pinch-runner
Joya Greer scored on a triple by
Brianna Anderson. She then scored on a sacrifice fly by Lomax.
The score stayed until the eighth when the Seahawks scratched a run across. Hampton answered with two as Washington reached on an error to allow Chavez to score to tie the game. After singles by Jeusi and Lyles loaded the bases, Anderson drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly.
Noelle Doan won her tenth game of the year throwing a complete game, allowing nine hits and striking out four. Jeusi was 3-for-4, and Anderson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Hampton will conclude the tournament Sunday with Drexel at noon and Delaware at 2 pm.
