SOFTBALL DROPS THREE-GAME SET AT DELAWARE STATE

DOVER, Del. –
The Hampton University softball team lost all three games of a series against Delaware State at the Hornets Nest on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lady Pirates (13-23, 2-4 MEAC) fell 5-0 in Saturday before dropping both games on Sunday's doubleheader; they lost the first game 5-2 before falling 11-5 in the second game.

The Lady Hornets scored four of their five runs on Saturday in the bottom of the fourth inning on the strength of five hits, before adding another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Bria Green.

Freshman Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out four in six innings of work on Saturday, while the Lady Pirates scattered four hits against three Delaware State pitchers.

In Sunday's first game, the Lady Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single up the middle from junior Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.), before Delaware State tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout.

The Lady Hornets (13-11-1, 3-0 MEAC) then scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, but Hampton cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth after senior Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) singled to left field to bring home senior Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.).

Delaware State added another run in the sixth to take the 5-2 win.

Byrd struck out three in six innings of work in the first game of the doubleheader, while junior Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.) went 3-for-3 at the plate and senior Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) was 2-for-4.

The Lady Hornets were up 3-0 after three innings in Sunday's second game, before the Lady Pirates answered with five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Scott got things going with an RBI single with the bases loaded, before junior Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) brought in another run when she was hit by a pitch.

Junior Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) then tripled down the left-field that brought in three more runs.

Delaware State scored once in the fifth to cut Hampton's lead to 5-4, before the Lady Hornets blew the game open in the sixth inning with seven runs to take the 11-5 victory.

Jackson struck out two in six innings of work in the second game, Estep went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Trimble had a team-high three RBIs.
