Wilmington, N.C. – Charleston Southern scored all eight of its runs in the first three innings and eventually held on to defeat Hampton 8-5 in the consolation bracket of the Seahawk Classic hosted by UNC – Wilmington.
CSU posted three run in its first at bat behind an RBI double by Lisa Rice and a two-run single to right from Candace Rowell. However, the Lady Pirates countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when pitcher Jada Jeffries drove in Maggie Wolfe and Jennifer Gonzales scored on an error by the Bucs’ right fielder Amy Trenkamp.
The Bucs chased Jeffries from the game after she allowed two more runs in the second, but Amanda Black didn’t fair much better, surrendering three runs on three hits in the third. Megan Hall did most of the damage with a two-run double that gave CSU an 8-2 lead after three innings.
Jeffries drove in her second run of the day with a single in the fifth scoring pinch runner Joselyn Matthews and Wolfe’s two-out single in the sixth sent two more across the plate for Hampton. Unfortunately, the Lady Pirates went down in order in their final at bat to give CSU the victory.
Amanda Noble threw a complete game striking out 12 to earn the win for the Bucs, while Jeffries picked up the loss for Hampton.
