Gilchrist recorded his fourth 100 yard receiving game.
HAMPTON, VA – Time just ran out for the Pirates,(4-3; 3-3 MEAC), who just could not get things moving in the final seconds as they took their first loss to the Bulldogs of South Carolina State (4-3; 3-1 MEAC) 28-14 at Armstrong Stadium.
With 02:51 left on the clock the Pirates defense was able to come up big with a force fumble by senior Defensive End Kendall Langford in the forth quarter. With enough time on the clock and down by only 4 points it was a chance for Quarterback TJ Mitchell to show the crowd that he too knew how to mount a comeback. The Bulldogs had other things in mind as Patrick Brooks forced Mitchell to fumble the ball heading for a first down with 1:52 reminding in the game. Hampton’s defense would come up big yet again as they held the Bulldogs offense and placed the ball back in Mitchell’s hand. The Pirates just could not get anything moving on offense as time ran out.
Mitchell completed 19 passes for a total of 223-yards passing with a touchdown (his 12th on the season) and he would also get nine yards rushing on the day. Hampton had 314 yards of total offense with only 91-yards rushing. The Pirates also accumulated 20 first downs and completed 19 passes to the Bulldogs eight on the day.
The highlight of the day for the Pirates was Jeremy Gilchrist as he returned a punt 72 yards for to give Hampton a 17-14 lead with 2:50 left on the third-period. Gilchrist also had 110-yards receiving, which is his fifth game with over 100-yards receiving.
The Bulldogs led by Cleveland McCoy had 416-yards of total offense and 290-yards passing. McCoy led in rushing yards, as he rushed 19 times for 154 yards and scoring runs of 19 and 31 yards and a tossed nine-yard scoring pass to tight end Spencer Miller. He completed 8 of 18 attempts for 126 yards and a touchdown.
The Pirates will be on the road next week as they travel to Winston-Salem, NC to face the Rams of Winston-Salem State University at 6:00 pm. The game will take place at Bowman-Gray Stadium. The Bulldogs return to action next Saturday when they host Delaware State in their Homecoming contest, beginning at 1:30 pm.
